Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Apologize for Controversial Support Letters in Danny Masterson’s Trial

In a recent turn of events, Hollywood power couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have issued a public apology for the character letters they wrote in support of their “That ’70s Show” co-star, Danny Masterson, during his sexual assault trial. The letters, which referred to Masterson as a “role model,” had drawn criticism and backlash from various quarters.

The couple took to Instagram to express their remorse and clarify their intentions behind the letters. Kutcher stated, “We are aware of the pain that has been caused by the character letters that we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson.” Kunis, sitting beside her husband in the video, added, “We support victims. We have done this historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future.”

Kutcher went on to explain that Masterson’s family had reached out to them, requesting character letters that would “represent the person that we knew for 25 years.” The couple emphasized that their intention was never to question the legitimacy of the judicial system or undermine the testimony of the victims.

“The letters were intended for the judge to read and not to undermine the testimony of the victims or re-traumatize them in any way,” Kutcher clarified. “We would never want to do that, and we’re sorry if that has taken place.”

The video concluded with Kunis expressing empathy for all victims of sexual assault, sexual abuse, or rape, saying, “Our heart goes out to every single person who’s ever been a victim of sexual assault, sexual abuse, or rape.”

Despite their public apology, one of the women who accused Masterson of rape, known as Jane Doe #1, criticized the couple’s response as “incredibly insulting and hurtful.” She urged them to practice radical accountability and self-education regarding their privilege, especially Ashton Kutcher, who claims to work with victims of sex crimes.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis were among more than 50 individuals who wrote character letters to the judge in support of Masterson ahead of his sentencing. Notable “That ’70s Show” stars, including Debra Jo Rupp (Kitty) and Kurtwood Smith (Red), also penned letters in support of the convicted actor.

In a segment of Kutcher’s letter, he described Masterson as someone who “takes his job seriously” and is an “excellent role model.” In Kunis’ letter, she referred to Masterson as an “amazing friend” and “outstanding older brother figure” who leads by example.

Recently, Danny Masterson was sentenced to the maximum term of 30 years to life in downtown Los Angeles, making him eligible for parole at the age of 77. The case has stirred conversations about sexual assault awareness and the responsibility of celebrities in addressing such matters.
