After five years of anticipation, Aquaman is resurfacing in theaters, and fans couldn’t be more excited. Warner Bros. has just dropped the first trailer for “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” marking the triumphant return of Jason Momoa as the beloved aquatic hero of the DC Universe.

In “Lost Kingdom,” we find Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman, now firmly seated on the throne of Atlantis. This highly-anticipated sequel sees him joining forces with his half-brother Orm, portrayed by Patrick Wilson, to confront the merciless pirate Black Manta, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Here’s the thrilling logline for the movie: “Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time, Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.”

Joining Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the film boasts an ensemble cast including Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, Willem Dafoe, and Dolph Lundgren reprising their roles from the original movie. Randall Park returns as Dr. Stephen Shin, who made a cameo appearance in the first installment. Additionally, Vincent Regan, Indya Moore, and Pilou Asbæk join this star-studded lineup. James Wan returns as the director, with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick penning the script.

One of the noteworthy aspects of the film is that it marks Amber Heard’s return to the big screen after her highly publicized defamation trial with ex-husband Johnny Depp. During the trial, Heard claimed that her role was reduced by the studio due to the fallout from her divorce, which subjected her to significant online harassment. She disclosed that she received $1 million for her role in the first “Aquaman” and $2 million for the sequel, despite the role being “a very pared-down version.”

Director James Wan clarified in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the focus of the “Aquaman” sequel was always intended to be on the relationship between Arthur and Orm. He explained, “I always pitched this to everyone from the get-go. The first ‘Aquaman’ was Arthur and Mera’s journey. The second movie was always going to be Arthur and Orm. So, the first was a romance action-adventure movie, the second one is a bromance action-adventure movie.”

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is the fourth DC movie to be released this year, following the somewhat underwhelming receptions of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” “The Flash,” and “Blue Beetle.” As DC Studios undergoes a reboot of the DC Universe under co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, no official announcements have been made regarding Aquaman or Jason Momoa’s involvement in the upcoming slate of DC projects.

Mark your calendars because “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is set to make a splash in theaters on December 20, 2023. Watch the thrilling trailer below and get ready for an underwater adventure like no other!
