The entertainment world mourns the loss of a true icon as Richard Roundtree, best known for his groundbreaking portrayal of Detective John Shaft in the “Shaft” franchise, passed away on October 24th at the age of 81. His longtime manager, Patrick McMinn, confirmed that Roundtree’s battle with pancreatic cancer ended on that fateful day, with his family by his side.

Richard Roundtree’s illustrious career spanned an impressive five decades, but it was his role as Detective John Shaft in the 1971 action thriller “Shaft” that left an indelible mark on the industry. In this role, he became the first Black action hero, breaking new ground in Hollywood. He went on to reprise this iconic character in the sequels “Shaft’s Big Score!,” “Shaft in Africa,” and the short-lived 1973 “Shaft” TV series.

Roundtree’s legacy extended to the 2000 film “Shaft,” directed by John Singleton and starring Samuel L. Jackson, and the 2019 sequel helmed by Tim Story. His impact on the franchise’s enduring success is immeasurable.

Beyond his role as Shaft, Richard Roundtree’s filmography boasted an array of notable credits. In 1981, he appeared in “Inchon,” alongside Laurence Olivier and Ben Gazzara. In 1984, he shared the screen with Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds in “City Heat.” His versatility as an actor shone through in a diverse range of roles in films like “Se7en,” “George of the Jungle,” “Body of Influence,” “Amityville: A New Generation,” and “What Men Want.” His final appearance on the big screen was in the 2022 comedy “Moving On.”

 


Richard Roundtree’s talent was not confined to the silver screen. He made a significant impact on television as well. In the acclaimed 1977 miniseries “Roots,” he portrayed the character of Sam Bennett, making a powerful contribution to this landmark series. His television credits include appearances in series such as “Generations,” “413 Hope St.,” “Alias,” “Diary of a Single Mom,” “Buddies,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Soul Food,” “Being Mary Jane,” and “Family Reunion.” In 2022, he featured in season 2 of Ava DuVernay’s OWN series, “Cherish the Day.”
