In a historic diplomatic rendezvous, King Felipe VI of Spain gears up to meet Argentina’s president-elect, Javier Milei, on Saturday, December 9, just ahead of the official inauguration scheduled for the following day. This significant meeting will unfold at the Palacio San Martin, the hub of the Argentinian Foreign Ministry.

Before meeting the president-elect, King Felipe VI is slated to visit Alberto Fernandez, the outgoing president, at the presidential residence of Los Olivos. This pre-inauguration engagement underscores the diplomatic finesse involved in such transitions of power.

Diplomatic Engagements and Celebrations

King Felipe VI’s arrival on Saturday morning marks a historic moment, accompanied by Juan Fernandez Trigo, Secretary of State for Latin America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the World. This visit represents the first instance of King Felipe VI personally representing Spain at an Argentine leader’s inauguration since ascending the throne in June 2014.

Adding a touch of community connection, the King will engage with members of the Spanish community in Argentina at the Spanish Embassy. This reflects a commitment to fostering relationships beyond official diplomatic circles.

Official Inauguration Ceremony

Sunday will witness King Felipe VI attending the official power transfer ceremony in Congress, where President-Elect Milei will take his oath. The subsequent inaugural ceremony at the Casa Rosada promises a significant address by Milei, setting the tone for his presidential term.

Regional Leaders and International Presence

The event holds international significance with the presence of regional leaders, including Chilean President Gabriel Boric, Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou, and Paraguayan President Santiago Pena. This diverse representation underscores the collaborative spirit in the region.

Notably, the attendance pattern marks a departure from previous inaugurations, with King Felipe VI personally representing Spain, in contrast to the representation by Juan Carlos I in 2015 and Pilar Llop in 2019.

Santiago Abascal, president of Vox, will also grace the event, expressing optimism for Argentina’s future following Milei’s electoral victory.

Javier Milei secured his presidential position on November 19, clinching a second-round victory over Peronist candidate Sergio Massa, who enjoyed support from Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
