A horrifying stampede at a ‘satsang’ in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras claimed the lives of at least 116 people, including women and children, on Tuesday. The state government has initiated an investigation and sent three ministers to oversee relief efforts on the ground.

Inspector General (Aligarh) Shalabh Mathur confirmed the death toll, highlighting the overcrowding at the event as a significant factor. Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, who visited the stampede site, stated that among the 116 fatalities, 108 were women, seven were children, and one was a man. So far, 72 victims have been identified. Both the state and central governments have announced ex-gratia payments of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

The satsang, organized by the Manav Mangal Milan Sadbhavna Samagam Committee for self-styled godman Narayan Sakar Hari (Bhole Baba), turned tragic when devotees rushed to get a glimpse of the spiritual leader. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as people suffocated and bodies piled up. Victims were transported to Sikandara Rao Trauma Centre and the government hospital in Etah for emergency treatment.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, ordering a detailed investigation led by Additional DG Agra. High-ranking officials, including the Chief Secretary and DGP, are currently overseeing the situation. Three state ministers are also present at the scene to coordinate relief operations.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended their condolences to the victims’ families. Prime Minister Modi, addressing the Parliament, paused his speech to acknowledge the tragedy and assure support from the central government. Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress’s Rahul Gandhi, criticized the state government’s preparedness and response, urging comprehensive support for the affected families and injured.
