In a notable shift within the Alabama Crimson Tide’s football lineup, it appears that a change at the quarterback position is on the horizon.

As the 10th-ranked Crimson Tide prepare to face South Florida this Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC), sources close to the team have informed ESPN’s Chris Low that sophomore Tyler Buchner is expected to take the helm, relegating Jalen Milroe to the bench. The decision to start Buchner follows a week of intense practice, where he took the lion’s share of first-team reps, according to insider reports.

The quarterback shake-up comes after Jalen Milroe held the starting position for Alabama in the team’s first two games. However, the last week’s matchup against Texas brought some challenges, with Milroe throwing two interceptions in Alabama’s 34-24 loss.

Tyler Buchner’s association with Alabama’s offensive coordinator, Tommy Rees, adds an intriguing layer to this quarterback switch. Buchner, a transfer from Notre Dame during the spring, worked under Rees during their time with the Fighting Irish. In Alabama’s season opener against Middle Tennessee, Buchner saw action in mop-up duty, completing 3 of 5 passes for 27 yards.

Notably, Buchner commenced the previous season as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback before an injury in the second game disrupted his campaign. His return for the Gator Bowl was marked by an impressive performance, accounting for five touchdowns. However, it also included three interceptions, including a pick-six, in Notre Dame’s 45-38 victory over South Carolina.

The initial report regarding Tyler Buchner’s expected start was first brought to light by 247Sports. As fans eagerly anticipate this quarterback transition, it remains to be seen how Buchner will fare in his new role and whether this move will provide the Crimson Tide with a boost as they continue their college football campaign.
