After a challenging performance in the recent 27-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has candidly assessed his play as “robotic” and not characteristic of his true self. Fields believes that part of the issue may be excessive coaching guidance, causing him to overthink during games.

Fields shared his thoughts, saying, “You know, could be coaching, I think,” acknowledging that while coaches provide valuable insights during preparation, he needs to find the balance between absorbing information and playing freely when the game kicks off.

In the Tampa Bay game, Fields completed 16 of 29 passes for 211 yards, securing a touchdown but also suffering two interceptions. His rushing performance was notably limited, with just 3 yards gained on four carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run. This marked his lowest rushing yardage since his rookie season.

The defeat against the Buccaneers extended the Bears’ losing streak to 12 games, dating back to October 2022.

Fields expressed his intention to adjust his approach when facing the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, aiming to return to his natural playing style. He emphasized the need to “play football how I know to play football” by reducing excessive overthinking and relying more on instincts.

Reflecting on the Tampa Bay game, Fields mentioned that he took more sacks than necessary, a situation often arising from his efforts to stay in the pocket, as advised during the offseason. He recognizes that while there are moments when staying in the pocket is warranted, he must also trust his internal clock to make decisive plays.

Fields conveyed his concerns to the Bears coaching staff, and he felt that they were receptive to his assessment of what went wrong in Tampa Bay. Coach Matt Eberflus emphasized the importance of allowing Fields to play freely and instinctively, balancing the need for precision with the ability to make spontaneous decisions.

In response to the situation, Fields stated, “My goal this week is just to say F it and go out there and play football how I know to play football.” He aims to shed the burden of excessive data and return to the simple essence of the game.

Fields emphasized that addressing these concerns within the team is part of the process to improve their performance in the early part of the season. He stressed that constructive feedback and accountability are vital for collective growth.

However, in a subsequent statement, Fields clarified that his quotes were taken “out of context.” He reiterated that he would never blame coaches or teammates and takes full responsibility for his performance. Fields emphasized his commitment to playing better in future games.

As the Bears prepare for their upcoming matchups, all eyes will be on Justin Fields as he strives to regain his instinctual playing style and lead the team to success.
