In an unfortunate turn of events, star cornerback Trevon Diggs has suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee during a recent practice. Diggs, known for his incredible ball-hawking skills, leaves a significant void in the Dallas Cowboys’ defense. Since 2020, no cornerback in the NFL has more interceptions than Diggs’ impressive tally of 18. His impact on the field has been nothing short of spectacular.

Under the guidance of defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, the Cowboys have embraced man coverage at the highest rate in the NFL since 2021. In this defensive scheme, Diggs has thrived, amassing 15 interceptions and 38 passes defended during his tenure. Even in the first two games of the current season, he allowed a mere three receptions on eight targets for a total of 31 yards, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

While Diggs’ absence is undoubtedly a significant loss, the Dallas Cowboys have faced adversity before and emerged stronger. Last season, they lost star quarterback Dak Prescott in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite this setback, they secured four victories out of five games with Cooper Rush as the starter. Additionally, the team played a substantial portion of the season without Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith due to a torn hamstring and still managed to win ten games.

Now, the Cowboys find themselves in a situation where they must rely on their cornerback depth to maintain the defensive prowess demonstrated in the first two games of the season. The defense has been formidable, allowing just 10 points, recording an impressive 10 sacks, and forcing seven turnovers.

One significant factor working in the Cowboys’ favor is the acquisition of Stephon Gilmore, a seasoned cornerback who celebrated his 33rd birthday recently. Gilmore joined the Cowboys from the Indianapolis Colts in March, and his presence now becomes even more crucial. In the season opener against the New York Giants, he secured an interception, earning praise from teammates for his football IQ and skill.

Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb expressed his admiration for Gilmore, describing him as “probably the smartest DB” he has ever faced. Gilmore’s ability to anticipate and eliminate routes has made him an invaluable asset to the team.

In the absence of Trevon Diggs, the responsibility of lining up opposite Gilmore falls on DaRon Bland. While Bland is known for excelling as a slot corner, only two of his eight career starts have come on the outside. Nonetheless, he showcased his capabilities by leading the Cowboys in interceptions last season with five and returning an interception for a touchdown in this year’s opener against the Giants. Remarkably, Bland has allowed a passer rating of just 66.5 as the nearest defender, ranking fifth among defensive backs targeted at least 60 times since last season.

Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has expressed his confidence in Bland’s abilities, emphasizing his versatility as a significant asset to the team. Bland’s readiness and consistency have been evident in his performance.

Another option for the Cowboys is Jourdan Lewis, who was having an impressive season last year before suffering a Lisfranc injury in his right foot in October. Lewis made his comeback last week against the Jets, playing 10 snaps and making an impact by forcing a third-down incompletion.

Lewis has declared himself fully healthy and ready to contribute. With his foot stability restored, he aims to showcase his abilities and make a significant impact on the Cowboys’ defense.

While the loss of Trevon Diggs is undoubtedly a setback, the Dallas Cowboys are no strangers to overcoming adversity. With Stephon Gilmore, DaRon Bland, Jourdan Lewis, and other talented cornerbacks, the Cowboys are well-equipped to maintain their defensive dominance and continue their pursuit of success in the NFL.
