In a remarkable season that has seen the New York Liberty emerge as serious contenders for their first-ever WNBA championship, the architect of this remarkable transformation, Jonathan Kolb, has been honored as the 2023 WNBA Executive of the Year. Kolb’s strategic genius and bold moves have propelled the Liberty into the championship spotlight.

This prestigious award is a result of the votes cast by the league’s 12 top executives, with a rule ensuring that individuals could not vote for themselves. Kolb’s exceptional leadership earned him six first-place votes, placing him ahead of accomplished executives like Dallas’ Greg Bibb and Connecticut’s Darius Taylor, who also received multiple first-place votes.

Kolb’s journey towards this accolade began with a vision, and within just one year, he turned the Liberty from playoff contenders into formidable championship hopefuls. The offseason leading up to the 2023 WNBA season will be remembered as a historic one for the Liberty. They orchestrated a series of strategic moves, making them a force to be reckoned with.

The Liberty’s transformation can be traced back to a series of pivotal acquisitions. Notably, they secured the services of Jonquel Jones, the 2021 WNBA Most Valuable Player, in a three-team trade. Additionally, they successfully signed two more WNBA superstars, Breanna Stewart (2018 MVP) and Courtney Vandersloot (seven-time assists leader), as free agents.

With these high-caliber players joining forces with the talented Sabrina Ionescu (2020 No. 1 draft pick) and 2021 All-Star Betnijah Laney, the Liberty have firmly established themselves as championship contenders. Their sights are set on dethroning the reigning champions, the Las Vegas Aces, whom they tied with in a thrilling 2-2 regular-season series but finished just two games behind in the standings.

Jonathan Kolb shared his thoughts on the Liberty’s transformative offseason, calling it a “confluence of events that will probably never happen again.” The confluence he refers to involves several factors aligning perfectly—the Liberty’s rebuilding phase, the availability of players like Jones in the trade market, and the free agency of Stewart and Vandersloot, two players widely regarded as all-time greats. Notably, Stewart and Vandersloot willingly accepted contracts below the supermax salary in their pursuit of a championship, demonstrating their commitment to the Liberty’s cause.

The Liberty’s 32-8 record for the season represents their best winning percentage in franchise history, marking a remarkable turnaround from their 2-20 campaign in 2020, which followed Sabrina Ionescu’s season-ending ankle injury. Furthermore, the Liberty clinched their first championship of any kind by defeating the Aces in the Commissioner’s Cup championship in August.

The success story of the Liberty has its roots in 2019 when Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai purchased the franchise. They brought Jonathan Kolb on board as the general manager, and together, they embarked on a journey to revitalize and reshape the Liberty. Relocating the team to Brooklyn, enhancing its presence in the city, and investing in top-notch facilities and resources have all contributed to the Liberty’s resurgence.

Jonathan Kolb reflected on the franchise’s growth, stating, “I think this is right on time with our plan that we had in place.” He acknowledged that not all plans reach their desired conclusion, but in this case, everything fell into place perfectly.

As the Liberty gear up for their playoff campaign, they have a roster filled with players boasting extensive playoff experience. With the likes of Stewart, Vandersloot, Jones, and others who have tasted championship glory, the Liberty are ready to pursue their mission with unwavering determination.

Jonathan Kolb’s leadership has undoubtedly been instrumental in the Liberty’s transformation into championship contenders. As they embark on their playoff journey, the basketball world eagerly awaits to see if this remarkable season will culminate in the Liberty’s first-ever WNBA championship.
