Iowa’s football program is facing a major shakeup as offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, son of longtime head coach Kirk Ferentz, will not return for the 2024 season. This unexpected move has drawn national attention due to the team’s historic offensive struggles, leaving fans and experts alike speculating about the future of Iowa football.

The decision was announced by interim athletic director Beth Goetz, who supervises Brian Ferentz due to nepotism laws. It comes after discussions with Brian Ferentz, Kirk Ferentz, and university president Barbara Wilson. The unique situation created by Iowa’s offensive woes this season and Ferentz’s contract led to this significant change in the coaching staff.

The Hawkeyes have faced a challenging season on the offensive front, ranking 118th nationally in scoring offense with just 19.5 points per game. They are last nationally in yards per game, averaging a mere 232.4, significantly trailing the next-worst offense in the nation. The team has encountered several setbacks, including injuries to starting quarterback Cade McNamara and key tight ends Luke Lachey and Erick All.

Brian Ferentz, who has served as the team’s offensive coordinator since 2017, found his contract under an unusual spotlight this year. It included a points-per-game provision that required the team to average 25 points per game during the 2023 season and win at least seven games to extend his two-year rolling contract beyond June 30, 2024. With Iowa’s offensive struggles, the team fell well short of meeting this benchmark.

Kirk Ferentz, the nation’s longest-tenured coach, has had only three offensive coordinators during his tenure at Iowa. This departure marks a rare instance of a coordinator being relieved of duties in the program’s history. Kirk Ferentz is set to address reporters to discuss this significant development.

Brian Ferentz expressed his commitment to the university, stating that his priority remains the well-being of the students and the team’s success. His singular goal throughout his time at Iowa has been to contribute to the football team’s success, a sentiment he will continue to uphold.

The future of Iowa football and the search for a new offensive coordinator now take center stage as the Hawkeyes look to address their offensive challenges and strive for success on the field.

Stay tuned for more updates and developments as Iowa football navigates through this pivotal time in the schedule and coaching staff changes.
